Instead of the mighty Fraser tumbling down to the Pacific we now found ourselves travelling alongside the Miette, a rushing little river flowing eastward, that quickly grew in strength the closer we got to the town of Jasper. Here it flows into the mighty Athabasca River, that itself continues on for thousands of miles, picking up many rivers along the way, eventually flowing through Great Slave Lake, and then itself being swallowed up by the Mackenzie River, eventually flowing into the Arctic Ocean by Inuvik! What an incredible watershed. The town of Jasper sits at the point where the Miette enters the Athabasca. It was originally built as a fur trading post for fur coming East from West of the Rockies through the Yellowhead pass. Later when the railroad arrived in 1912, it quickly became a destination of choice for wealthy tourists of the time. Jasper is the only town in Jasper National Park. The entire park including Jasper along with Banff National Park, Kootenay National Park, and Yoho National Park, (all adjoining each other) is designated a World Heritage Site.
