how long did it take for the Canadian Rockies to form? Was it a slow or fast formation?

Was the formation a sudden occurance or would they have taken a long time to form. Any ideas what it would have been like to be in the area when the mountains actually form as I understand that at one time the mountains would have been under an ocean.
